How the EMI Calculator Works

An EMI, or Equated Monthly Installment, is the fixed amount you pay every month toward a loan until it's fully repaid. Each installment covers a portion of the principal (the amount you borrowed) and a portion of the interest charged by the lender. Early in the loan, most of your EMI goes toward interest; as the loan matures, more of it goes toward paying down the principal.

This calculator uses the standard reducing-balance EMI formula used by banks and NBFCs in India and elsewhere:

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n − 1)

Where P is the loan principal, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n is the loan tenure in months. Enter your loan amount, annual interest rate, and tenure above to see your monthly EMI, total interest payable over the life of the loan, and the total amount you'll repay.

This tool works for home loans, car loans, personal loans, and any other fixed-rate, fixed-tenure loan with monthly repayments. It assumes a fixed interest rate for the full tenure and does not account for prepayments, floating-rate resets, or processing fees — for an exact figure, always confirm the final numbers with your lender.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good interest rate for a loan?

Interest rates vary by loan type, lender, loan amount, tenure, and your credit profile. Home loans typically carry the lowest rates, followed by car loans, with personal loans usually the highest since they're unsecured. Compare offers from multiple lenders before committing.

Does a longer tenure reduce my EMI?

Yes — spreading the same loan amount over a longer tenure lowers the monthly EMI, but increases the total interest you pay over the life of the loan. A shorter tenure means a higher EMI but less interest paid overall.

Is this calculator accurate for floating-rate loans?

It gives an accurate snapshot based on the rate you enter, but floating-rate loans can change over time as the lender's benchmark rate moves, which will change your actual EMI or tenure. Re-run the calculation whenever your rate changes.

Does this include processing fees or other charges?

No. This calculator computes principal and interest only. Lenders often charge a one-time processing fee and may include other charges like insurance — check your loan's full cost breakdown before signing.
